SEAMEO College Pre-Project Implementation Activities and Advocacy

After obtaining approval of the SEAMEO Council, various activities have been conducted to promote SEAMEO College and prepare for its full swing implementation.

The Launch of SEAMEO College

SEAMEO Collegewas launched on20 March 2013 in a separate ceremony during the 47th SEAMEO Council Conference in Hanoi, Vietnam.  The launch featured a ceremonial ribbon cutting which was led by the SEAMEO Council President, and participated in by officials from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Japan and the Asian Development Bank.

 

Diplomatic Briefing on SEAMEO College

The briefing on SEAMEO College for the diplomatic community in Thailand was convened on 29 April 2013 at the SEAMEO Secretariat, Bangkok, Thailand.  The SEAMEO Secretariat with support of SEAMEO SPAFA and SEAMEO TROPMED Network introduced SEAMEO College to the members and representatives of various embassies and consulates in Thailand.

Twenty countries attended the briefing including some SEAMEO Member Countries and Associate Member Countries.  Other countries that attended the special meeting include the United States of America, Japan, Republic of Korea and Argentina. The European Union and some United Nations agencies and international organizations attended the briefing including UNESCO, UNICEF and the World Bank.

Confirmation of Support of Thailand as Host to SEAMEO College Project Management Office

The support of Thailand as host of SEAMEO College Project Management Office was confirmed in a ceremony on 7 August 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand through the signing and exchange of notes between Thailand and the Asian Development Bank.  As SEAMEO Member Country, Thailand serves as host to the SEAMEO College Project Management Office which is housed at the SEAMEO Secretariat in Bangkok, Thailand.  Thailand will also be the venue of various activities and management meetings under the project.

SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba International Symposium featuring SEAMEO College

The joint SEAMEO and University of Tsukuba International Symposium held on 22 and 23 February 2014 in Ibaraki, Japan featured SEAMEO College in support of the symposium’saim of introducing education innovations of Southeast Asia and ASEAN.  The symposium was also meant to establish linkages between SEAMEO Centres and education institutions in Japan.  The symposium featured SEAMEO College as a key initiative in strengthening capacity to promote education and social development in Southeast Asia.
